Lakin akintola

Born in the hilly countryside of Nigeria, Lakin Akintola spent his childhood in keen admiration of all the rugged beauties only nature could offer. According to the British artist it was these early interactions with nature and the vibrant cultural "excesses" of his African root that have helped shaped his natural gifts and guided his path in art. Although Lakin obtained a bachelor degree in animal science, the self-taught artist has spent the last thirty years showcasing his works in many galleries and exhibitions around the world. Although a versatile painter, Lakin has in recent times swapped his paints for fabrics; exploring African fabrics and recycled denims as the medium of choice. To him using recycled fabrics is not only good for the environment but a statement; reflective of his life journeys and the power of regeneration. From having a growing art gallery in Nigeria to starting all over in the United Kingdom, the untold stories of an artist, or a one-time fabric cutter and a tailor in an umbrella company is evident in his works and his flares for fabrics as his preferred medium of expression is therefore not surprising. As the artist’s travel across the globe his love for iconic landmarks are regular features of his works, Lakin believes by exploring the physical world around us it is possible to keep open the gate of the inner self; with every captured moment of chaos or calmness as raw materials for masterpieces yet unfinished. By exploring the world around us, the artist hopes he may present you hidden treasures in the faces of the people we meet and the things we often brush aside.
