SOUL OF THE STONE: A Living Sculpture Journey from Zimbabwe to Chicago

CHICAGO, IL — September–October 2026 — Gallery Guichard, in partnership with The Field Museum, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the South Shore Cultural Center, proudly presents Soul of the Stone, an eight-month cultural and artistic experience celebrating the rich tradition of Zimbabwean Shona stone sculpture.

He was born on the 9th of March 1985 in Masvingo, Gutu District in the Serima Area, of which he is the second born in his family. He did his primary education at Matizha primary school in 1998 then went on to secondary education at Chikwerengwe Secondary School in Masvingo.
While still a boy, he was inspired to pursue his artistic passion because at the rural area he grew up in used to carve wooden articles such as cooking sticks, so he then travelled to Harare end of 2001 and he met one of the more
established artists L. Gonde who taught him how to wash and finish stones. End of 2002 he
was able to do his own sculptures through his advice and inspiration. He started working on hard stones like spring stones, fruit stone
among other types of hard rocks. I am a member of Chitungwiza Arts Centre in Zimbabwe.
