SOUL OF THE STONE: A Living Sculpture Journey from Zimbabwe to Chicago
CHICAGO, IL — September–October 2026 — Gallery Guichard, in partnership with The Field Museum, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the South Shore Cultural Center, proudly presents Soul of the Stone, an eight-month cultural and artistic experience celebrating the rich tradition of Zimbabwean Shona stone sculpture.
Tafunga attended primary school in Ruwa and high school in Tafara where he completed his education. Straight from school his heart was set on stone sculpture. His greatest influence was his older brother Lameck, who has since passed away. Lameck was a master sculptor and one of the most creative artists of the second generation.
Tafunga is a member of the highly creative and successful Bonjisi family of Zimbabwean sculptors. He is a renowned artist of the 3rd generation of contemporary Shona stone art. Born a twin to his brother Garikai in 1982, he grew up in Ruwa, went to school there and completed formal education in Tafara. He joined his older brother Lameck and learned the art of stone sculpting from him, a master sculptor and one of the most influential artists in Zimbabwe, who himself learned the art from Nicholas Mukomberanwa, the famous co-initiator of modern time Shona art.
Tafunga started his own work in 2000 and quickly drove his own style, based on the classic perception of the masters, and infused with his own formula of dynamic though balanced forms and appealing finish. He is a master of the depiction of the human body and his works tell an emotional story. Tafunga prefers working with hard stones such as Springstone, Cobalt, or Opal.
Tafunga has exhibited his works in a multitude of opportunities around the world and is a regular guest at live workshop shows in Europe.
