SOUL OF THE STONE: A Living Sculpture Journey from Zimbabwe to Chicago
CHICAGO, IL — September–October 2026 — Gallery Guichard, in partnership with The Field Museum, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the South Shore Cultural Center, proudly presents Soul of the Stone, an eight-month cultural and artistic experience celebrating the rich tradition of Zimbabwean Shona stone sculpture.
Witness Bonjisi was born on September 25, 1976, in the Mutoko District of Zimbabwe. He is one of seven siblings, and his late brother, Lameck Bonjisi, was one of the most significant artistic influences in shaping his creative journey.
Witness began his career as a sculptor in 1992. Under the mentorship of Lameck Bonjisi and the renowned late Nicholas Mukomberanwa, he developed his artistic foundation while participating in workshops in the United States and Switzerland. These experiences introduced him to Western artistic traditions and broadened his creative perspective, helping to refine and expand his unique sculptural style.
Today, Witness Bonjisi's work is represented in private collections and galleries around the world, including France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England, Greece, and the United States. His international exposure has played an important role in the evolution of his work, transforming it from traditional beginnings into a sophisticated contemporary artistic expression.
His sculptures are distinguished by their powerful forms, elegant lines, and strong visual presence. Influenced by Nicholas Mukomberanwa's mastery of form, Witness has developed a remarkable sense of line and composition. Working primarily in serpentine and opal stone, he skillfully reveals each material's natural colors and textures, creating richly layered sculptures that possess both vitality and emotional depth.
