SOUL OF THE STONE: A Living Sculpture Journey from Zimbabwe to Chicago
CHICAGO, IL — September–October 2026 — Gallery Guichard, in partnership with The Field Museum, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the South Shore Cultural Center, proudly presents Soul of the Stone, an eight-month cultural and artistic experience celebrating the rich tradition of Zimbabwean Shona stone sculpture.
ISHMAEL CHITIYO
Ishmael Chitiyo is a widely exhibited Zimbabwean artist with 29-years experience. Most recently, Chitiyo gave the Village of Matteson in Illinois, U.S, the first public piece of art in its 171-year history. He has been awarded and shortlisted for various honors, including the National Arts Merit Awards (2008) and Kristin Diehl (2006). He is one of the few founding members of Chitungwiza Arts Centre still active at one of Southern Africa's largest art hubs.
A Chitungwiza native, Chitiyo took up sculpture at the age of 16. Prematurely leaving school following the death of his parents, Chitiyo joined backyard workshops to eke out a living. He got his earliest notes from his brother Solomon Chitiyo,
subsequently
working under carver Ignatius
Zhuwakinyi. He fell under the influence of Sylvester Mubayi around the time Chitungwiza Arts Centre was jointly incepted by the United Nations
Development
Programme (UNDP) and the
Zimbabwean Government in1997 to Carter for new talent then scattered in backyard studios.
